'Too big...' - New £11m Pompey man explains why he joined after QPR, Derby County, Southampton, Sunderland and Hull links

Pompey new boy Josh Murphy admitted a reunion with John Mousinho was 'too big to turn down' as he looks to embark on a new project at Fratton Park.

The 29-year-old was announced by the club late last night after news broke amongst the media of his imminent arrival. Murphy was wanted by several of their Championship rivals, but he has opted to play under his former Oxford United teammate.

According to The Sun, Pompey's South Coast rivals Southampton sent scouts to watch him in April, along with West Brom, QPR, Sunderland and Hull City. Fellow Championship newcomers Derby County also had an interest, as well as Minnesota United but is Pompey who have won the race, and have signed him on a three-year contract.

He brings a wealth of experience to Pompey, having played 201 Championship games including the play-offs. Murphy has also graced the Premier League with both Norwich and Cardiff City.

"I'm happy and excited to be here and I'm raring to go," said Murphy to the official club website.

"I have a great relationship with the manager and the project here at the club was too big to turn down. It's a good fit for me at this stage of my career and I'm excited to get going."

Murphy was instrumental in getting the U's promoted last season having played a part in 16 goals with 10 scored and six assists. He scored twice in the play-off final against Bolton Wanderers, and now Pompey supporters can look forward to having a winger once rated at £11m on their books.

With Pompey and Oxford United playing in the same division, he will come up against the U's for the first time since his departure on Saturday, October 5 at Fratton Park. Murphy won't return to Oxfordshire until Pompey play them on Saturday, February 15 in 2025.
