Kenny Jackett: All-round Portsmouth striker John Marquis has more to game than goals

Of the top four divisions, only Ivan Toney has scored more domestic goals in 2020 than John Marquis.

But Kenny Jackett is adamant Pompey's in-form striker possesses more to his armoury than that prized six-yard box ability.

The summer recruit has now netted nine times in 14 games since the turn of the year, establishing himself as the Blues’ leading scorer.

It’s a 2020 tally which falls one behind Peterborough’s Toney’s return of 10.

Marquis’ latest scoring feat arrived against MK Dons on Tuesday night, taking him ahead of Ronan Curtis to 14 for the season.

And Jackett believes the 27-year-old offers an important ‘all-round game’.

He said: ‘I see John as a goalscorer and, as ever with goalscorers, they can get on a run of goals. He’s obviously in a good vein of form.

‘The goal he scored on Tuesday night, it’s inside the six-yard box, which a high number of his goals are.

‘It sort of deflected off a guy’s knee, seemed to go in off the post, but went in. That’s how it is, he is in the right place and it trickled over the line.

‘I think John can do a little bit of everything.

‘Although he is a decent size, he is quite mobile and makes good runs as well. We felt this season we needed a bit more down the sides in terms of pace – both him and Ellis (Harrison) coming in do that.

‘There is a time for John were being right up there, but there is also a time for John to come a little deeper and find a few more chances from that position in certain games.

‘There are a high number in the six-yard box, the Fleetwood goal probably started it off, it went under the centre-half’s foot and he poked it in on the line, those type of goals are there.

‘But he has an all-round game, with some pace and mobility to play people in. Ultimately, though, there is a hunger to score.’

While Toney and Marquis lead the way in 2020, others in form are Ollie Palmer (8), Sergio Aguero (7), Said Benrahma (7) and Ollie Watkins (7).
