Kenny Jackett insists he has identified areas of Pompey’s side which require strengthening in January’s transfer window.

However, the salary cap and squad size regulations will ‘complicate’ their ability to recruit fresh faces to bolster promotion ambition.

As it stands, Pompey’s squad is at the League One threshold of 22 players.

Players must depart to enable others to be added, either through being deregistered from the squad or leaving Fratton Park.

Regardless, Jackett is adamant Pompey are seeking new signings, with the team well-placed in fourth spot after 16 matches.

He told The News: ‘We are always looking ahead, trying to improve, seeing where we are with our squad and trying to plan.

‘This year it’s slightly complicated with the restriction on numbers up to 22 – and also with the salary cap. They are still things which need to be factored in.

‘But similarly, you can factor in those things and see what your options are as you come up to the window.

‘I don’t think there will be wholesale changes, it very much depends on what happens between now and then.

‘I understand there is only a couple of weeks, but we have until January 31 as well.

‘We will see what type of injuries we have, whether people are in form, but, all things being equal, I don’t think there will be wholesale changes.

‘Then it would have to be one person in and one person out, or people under 21 years of age.

‘It’s the same for all the clubs. We are pleased with our squad. Can we strengthen it in January? If we can we will, definitely, and that goes week to week.

‘There are areas I feel need strengthening, but that can change within a couple of games, suddenly you lose a couple of players and it changes the landscape.’

An option to create space would be to deregister members of the current 22-man squad.

Reeco Hackett-Fairchild is among those included, although is presently on loan to Bromley until next month.

The left-sided attacker is enjoying regular first-team football with the National League outfit following a frustrating lack of action at Fratton Park.

Jackett insists the Blues are continuing to monitor Hackett-Fairchild – and assessing whether he remains with the non-leaguers to make room in Pompey’s squad.

He added: ‘We will certainly assess it in January (Hackett-Fairchild). It’s good to see him up and playing now, scoring a couple of goals, which is good news.

‘We’ve been to watch him and he is into a rhythm which, after the last year he’s had, has been difficult.

‘We will assess that situation in January. It’s good to see him back playing.’
