Kenny Jackett reveals latest in Portsmouth pursuit of Millwall's Ben Thompson

The Blues are in the market for a central midfield addition ahead of Friday’s 5pm deadline.

They have been pursuing a potential loan deal for Thompson, who enjoyed an impressive loan spell in the 2018-19 campaign.

Certainly hopes were stoked on Friday, when it emerged from Millwall’s end that the 25-year-old is pushing for a loan spell to give him regular first-team football.

Jackett has not denied the Blues’ ongoing interest in a player who remains a big Pompey favourite.

Yet follow today’s 2-1 win over MK Dons, he conceded the chances of a Fratton Park reunion remain slim.

He told The News: ‘It doesn’t look likely in terms of getting Ben back. People have been asking me that for two years.

‘Substitute for Millwall last week, so I can’t see it happening.

‘I haven’t spoken to him personally. It looks like he’s in their plans, so I don’t think that’s one that will happen.’

While Thompson’s possible return doesn’t appear likely, Jackett is keen on at least one more recruit before the deadline.

In addition, the futures of Paul Downing and James Bolton remain unclear in terms of moving current squad players out.

Jackett added: ‘We’ll see if there are any opportunities or chances, there won’t be wholesale chances, as you know.

‘We’ll see if there are any ins or outs, it will be minimal if there are.

‘If it’s sometime who improves what we are doing or a young player on the way up, they are the two categories we are looking at.

‘If we can get a player in those categories then we will take them.’
