Pompey’s boss later admitted ‘one or two’ of the goals conceded were avoidable during his post-match assessment.

And it was assistance a dangerous Brighton attack didn’t require as they progressed comfortably into the third round of the competition.

Jackett told The News: ‘Obviously Brighton are a good side and, while some of our build-up play was very good, one or two of the goals were avoidable from our point of view.

‘But also they had some quality and scored some quality goals.

‘We did sometimes make the wrong decision and, as ever, when you are playing against a Premier League side they are ruthless in terms of hitting the target. The second goal was a fantastic strike.

‘I felt it was a tough night and Brighton deserved to win, but you can’t make those types of mistakes against a Premier League side.

‘Similarly, going the other way, we got ourselves into a lot of good positions and unfortunately couldn’t capitalise.

‘If you have a look at our corner count, it was double figures against a Premier League side.

‘Brighton had a lot of quality and it was tough for us - but I was pleased with the morale and attitude of the side. We kept going.

‘I have the confidence in our players both offensively and defensively to get the clean sheets and be able to score the goals which we need to be successful.’

Another tremendous disappointment during Pompey’s first defeat of the campaign was their delivery from dead balls.

Cam Pring and Ronan Curtis were entrusted with the responsibility in a game in which Blues corners reached double figures, a tally which pleased Jackett.

However, the quality of delivery was largely poor and immensely frustrating.

He added: ‘Unfortunately we couldn’t make our corners pay and I’m disappointed Bernardo scored a header from a corner as well.

‘While Brighton had possession, if you get into those situations as a lower-league side you must capitalise on that. Unfortunately we couldn't and maybe that would have given us more of a chance.

‘Cam Pring has a nice left foot and I do see the potential for him taking corners during the course of the year.

‘We did have one good header from Sean Raggett, when the keeper made a good save, but, other than that, they had enough power to handle us in an area where we worked hard to try to make a difference.’
