The Blues forward is expected to be named in Kenny Jackett’s squad for tonight’s visit of Swindon to Fratton Park.

That’s after the 26-year-old was omitted from the past four match-day 18s, with the manager instead utilising other options.

A hamstring injury suffered by Michael Jacobs in Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Plymouth has opened the door for the former Coventry striker.

And Jackett believes it’s only natural that Hiwula comes in from the cold to fill the void.

The manager said: ‘There's definitely an opportunity for him (Hiwula).

‘With Michael Jacobs being out, him coming into the group, coming into the 18, he's a natural replacement.’

Hiwula, who was linked with a move to Swindon last month, has made just seven appearances in all competitions since his arrival on a free transfer in October.

His two run-outs in League One – both as substitutes – amounting to just 10 minutes.

In total, the former Bradford and Fleetwood front man has been an unused substitute 13 times this season.

Jackett’s decision to once again overlook him for his match-day squad against Plymouth led to yet more fans questioning the reason for the Blues extending his short-term contract in January.

It also comes at a time when both John Marquis and Ellis Harrison – Pompey’s striker partnership for the visit of the Pilgrims – are struggling in front of goal.

Harrison has four goals to his name this season, with his last in the league dating back to the Blues’ 2-1 win against MK Dons on October 10.
