Kenny Jackett: We're in the market for new Portsmouth recruits after Gareth Evans exit

Recruitment has picked up this month, with Cameron Pring, Callum Johnson and Rasmus Nicolaisen arriving at Fratton Park.

In total that has been four summer signings, joining Sean Raggett, whose loan became permanent following his Norwich release.

However, as a consequence of last week’s departure of Gareth Evans, Jackett now has two free spaces in his Pompey squad.

Evans’ wage can be put towards recruiting at least one more new face to the south coast, with a midfielder high on the wanted list.

And Jackett admits the club are continuing to scour the market.

He told The News: ‘We have two spaces, so we will see. We don’t necessarily need too big a squad, though.

‘It’s important that we get the balance right and obviously have spaces for young players as well.

‘I don’t think there will be wholesale changes necessarily, from our point of view we are really concentrating on the squad that we have doing better.

‘However, we are very much keeping an eye out (on the market).

‘We will see as regards to the goalkeeping situation to where we are. We won’t need to put three keepers into the squad.’

As referred to by Jackett, registering two goalkeepers presents them with two free spots.

That would be Craig MacGillivray and Alex Bass, with the Blues seeking a loan for Duncan Turnbull.

However, Turnbull is presently needed for bench duty in the ongoing absence of Bass, who has bone bruising in his right foot.

By going with two goalkeepers, it will leave the Blues with 20 players in their squad – ensuring two spaces.

Pompey are bound by the salary cap and accompanying player restrictions, with League One and League Two teams allowed a maximum of 22-man squads.

In addition, players aged 21 and below aren’t calculated in that tally, meaning young loan arrivals wouldn’t count.

That remains another option for Jackett ahead of the October 16 closure of the transfer window.

Regardless, there are two slots for ‘senior’ players in his squad.
