Kenny Jackett's words of advice for 'professional' Portsmouth No2 Craig MacGillivray

Kenny Jackett hailed Craig MacGillivray’s professionalism but admitted he’ll need to ‘push hard’ to reclaim the Pompey No1 jersey.

And in what will be perceived as another blow for the Scot, the manager said the club’s interests will always outweigh that of any player.

MacGillivray has not featured for the Blues in the league since the 3-1 defeat at MK Dons on December 29.

That represented his 81 Pompey appearance following his arrival on a free from Shrewsbury in the summer of 2018.

But following the trip to the Stadium:MK he’s only managed two further outings – both in the Leasing.com Trophy – as Alex Bass firmly establishes himself as Jackett’s first-choice keeper.

Bass’ form since the turn of the year has seen both Crystal Palace and Middlesbrough linked with moves for the 22-year-old.

The manager told The News last week that he’s yet to receive any enquiries or offers for the academy graduate, who signed a new deal in January.

That keeps him contracted to Fratton Park until 2023 – unless Pompey decide to cash in – which will add to MacGillivray’s frustrations as he plays back-up.

Jackett said his current No 2 is showing ‘fantastic professionalism’ as he continues to put the work in to reclaim his starting position.

The boss insisted MacGillivray needed to continue that work ethic, though.

Meanwhile, any sympathy for his predicament was superseded by the need for the club to have quality competition within it’s ranks.

Jackett said: ‘It is frustrating for Craig but I do have a lot of time for him because he’s a fantastic professional.

‘He has to really push hard now to get back into the team.

‘It’s hard to predict the future (whether MacGillivray can dislodge Bass) but I have two very good goalkeepers for the coming season ahead and it’s not something we need to address.

‘I would have sympathy for the player because every player wants to be playing.

‘But, from the club’s point of view, it’s my job to put together the strongest squad possible.

‘Alex has come through the ranks, made big strides and we have two good goalkeepers.

‘I would have sympathy for Craig but things have to be right for the club and it’s not good being in a situation where we leave ourselves short.’

Bass has gone on to make 19 appearances since his call-up to the first team at Gillingham on New Year’s Day,

He conceded 15 goals in that time, recording six cleans sheets, as Pompey’s play-off bid ended in a penalty shootout defeat against Oxford.

Some blamed the youngster for both U’s goals as the tie ended 2-2 on aggregate.

However, Jackett continues to be impressed by Bass’ rate of development.

He added: I think it (having two quality keepers) is something that has developed rather than something we have gone for.

‘We are pleased we’ve produced a good young player through our ranks.

‘Craig arrived on a free transfer from Shrewsbury. It’s a situation that has developed rather than something we’ve gone for.

‘That puts us in a good situation in that department.’
