Leicester defender wants Championship football amid Portsmouth's interest

Pompey target Josh Knight is hopeful of landing a Championship club.

The Blues are keen on the Leicester defender as Kenny Jackett aim to bolster his defensive options ahead of a renewed League One promotion push.

Pompey have registered their interest with the Premier League outfit, after Knight spent the past one-and-a-half seasons on loan at Peterborough.

He primarily operated as a centre-midfielder for the Posh, scoring three goals in 26 appearances last term.

According to Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony, a return to London Road for the 22-year-old is off the cards.

But a switch to Fratton Park for Knight might also be difficult as he seeks to move up the pyramid and join a second-tier side.

MacAnthony wrote on Twitter: ‘Josh Knight wants championship football & to focus on playing CB in the champ. Understandable.

‘Wish him and family nothing but the best. What a man. Nothing but love for him from the Posh.’

Pompey currently have Sean Raggett, Paul Downing and Jack Whatmough as recognised centre-back options.

Raggett and Downing started the Blues' 2-0 friendly victory over Norwich under-23s on Saturday, with Whatmough coming on in the second half.
