Michael Smith recorded a hat-trick – yet still finished on the losing side in an eventful Checkatrade Trophy group game at Huish Park.

Paul Cook’s side, who had Matt Clarke making his first appearance of the campaign following injury, actually opened the scoring through Smith, but soon found themselves 4-2 down after 39 minutes.

Marc McNulty bagged a 19-minute hat-trick as Paul Cook’s side ran riot against 10-man York.

The Sheffield United loanee, who hadn’t previously netted at Fratton Park, had been recalled to the starting line-up for the fixture against the League Two strugglers.

Matt Tubbs had a habit of scoring against Cambridge United and he again taunted the Abbey Stadium faithful with a superb treble.

Although possessing one of the worst away records in the Football League at the time, Andy Awford’s side were devastating, with the inspirational Jed Wallace helping himself to five assists.

Richie Barker’s final signing as Pompey manager was Danny Hollands and the midfielder marked the final match of his Charlton loan spell with a hat-trick.

His goals arrived during a 15-minute spell stretching either side of half-time, yet Conor Hourihane’s last-gasp leveller denied Awford’s men victory on the last day of the 2013-14 campaign.

A last-minute penalty enabled Aruna Dindane to complete a treble against Wigan at Fratton Park.

The Ivory Coast international, on loan from Lens, was in inspired form, with Frederic Piquionne grabbing the other. Although two games later manager Paul Hart was sacked.

Benjani helped himself to a hat-trick in what proved to be his final Fratton Park Premier League match before switching to Manchester City later that month.

It took his tally to 12 goals in 25 games for Harry Redknapp’s side that season, who would go on to win the FA Cup and finish eighth in the Premier League.
