The midfielder crashed home a superb effort to seal Pompey a 3-1 success in south London last night.

Cannon's 61st-minute effort found the back of the net via the inside of the post, leaving Addicks keeper Ben Amos with no chance.

More importantly, it ensured Pompey returned to Fratton Park with all three points after strikes from Michael Jacobs and Tom Naylor.

Now Cannon wants to etch his name on the scoresheet more regularly as the Blues bid for League One promotion.

He said: ‘I'm just happy to get on the scoresheet.

‘I know it's not all about that side of things because I play a bit deeper but I need to start contributing to that side of things and it's good to help.

‘With the forward four we've been playing, even the five with Nayls joining in, there are goals in this team.

‘I have hit it well. Funnily enough, in the warm-up, I hit a few and it had a bit of a wobble on it. Thankfully, it's gone in and it's up there with the best I've scored.

‘There aren't really many, but there is probably only one that beats it. But I'm still happy with that.’

Cannon's had to watch his central-midfield partner and housemate Naylor enjoy a prolific season in front of goal.

The Pompey captain's 55th-minute header at The Valley was his seventh of the campaign, restoring the away side's lead after Jayden Stockley restored parity three minutes earlier.

Naylor's bagged some brilliant long-range efforts against the likes of Peterborough, King's Lynn and Plymouth this term.

Cannon quipped that Naylor's been giving him shooting lessons in the back garden of their Waterlooville home.

But that’s as far as their rivalry goes as the former Rochdale man has been ‘buzzing’ for his skipper.

Cannon added: 'Nayls was having a bit of banter in the changing room with me, saying you can do it.

'He's been telling everyone that he has been teaching me in the back garden!

'I'm really happy for him because he is scoring and he is doing really well. He hasn't been known for scoring goals but he's obviously got it in his locker.

‘This season, he is proving it. He's on seven now and I'm buzzing for him.

‘It's helping the team and I'm buzzing for him because he's one of my closest mates here.’
