Now Ross McCrorie is firmly back into the thick of things after returning to his parent club Rangers.

The 22-year-old made 23 appearances for Kenny Jackett's side during his season-long loan at Fratton Park.

And while many of Pompey's players have jetted away on holiday after their promotion bid fell short, the same thing can't be said for McCrorie.

The Scotland under-21 captain looks unlikely to be handed a summer break as he's already linked up with his Gers team-mates.

Steven Gerarrd’s side start the 2020-21 season in just more than a week’s time.

Rangers kick-off their campaign away to Aberdeen on Saturday, August 1.

The Scottish giants then facing Bayer Leverkusen in the second leg of the last 16 of the Europa League five days later, although McCrorie will be ineligble if he is not registered to play.

Gerrard’s men have already had three friendlies to get them fine-tuned for competitive action.

And McCrorie has played in two of them since heading back north of the border.

He came on as a substitute in a 2-1 victory over Hamilton before also featuring in a 2-0 win over Lyon in France.

The ex-Ayr United loanee was then left on the bench for the Gers’ 2-0 success over Nice on Saturday.

McCrorie will be looking to force his way into Gerrard’s plans for the upcoming campaign following his loan spell at Fratton Park.

He said: ‘I’m not sure what will happen because I’ve not been back here long enough yet.

‘I’m need to think about it when the time comes (if a loan opportunity comes up again).

‘But I’m just thankful for the experience of being able to play for such a brilliant club like Portsmouth.’
