No sign of Premier League rescue package as Portsmouth, Sunderland, Ipswich, Charlton and EFL clubs face financial ruin

Top-flight outfits met yesterday amid increasing pressure to help out the sides lower down the football pyramid facing going to the wall amid the coronavirus last night.

But multiple outlets last night reported they remain deadlocked over the prospect of doing so.

That procrastination is occurring with many lower-league sides and those outside of the EFL reporting they now have funds to remain operational for days and not weeks,

Pompey chief executive Mark Catlin’s suggestion it’s the government and not top-flight clubs who should be taking the lead, after the return of fans was stopped by those in power, was echoed at a Premier League meeting held yesterday.

Premier League clubs are also said to be keen to focus on their own financial difficulties, as they also face operating behind closed doors for the foreseeable future.

There has been the suggestion, however, that Premier League clubs would look at funding a testing regime for coronavirus moving forward with the EFL stating each random testing or a structured programme needs to be explored again through a second spike of Covid-19.
