However, Peterborough battled back superbly in the second period.

Jonson Clarke-Harris' double took his tally up to 19 goals for the season, while Siriki Dembele was also on target.

The win ensured Darren Ferguson's side leapfrogged Hull into second.

Peterborough are now also four points clear of Pompey after their insipid 3-1 loss at Bristol Rovers.

Meanwhile, more pressure piled on Paul Lambert as Ipswich Town were held to a goalless draw by relegation-threatened Northampton.

The Tractor Boys remain four points outside the play-off places and had Flynn Downes sent off late to compound their misery.

In the other game of the evening, Blackpool edged a 1-0 win over Rochdale ahead of their trip to Fratton Park on Saturday.

Sullay Kaikai bagged the only goal of the Bloomfield Road clash on 21 minutes.
