First half goals from Ben Close and John Marquis, plus efforts from Ronan Curtis and Christian Burgess gave Kenny Jackett’s side the edge over the Tykes.

Here’s what those closest to the action had to say about the result…

I felt there would be goals in the game with the way Barnsley set up.

They’ve given a lot of Championship defences problems. They’ve got some talented individuals.

We thought a clean sheet would be tough but also felt we’d create chances going the other way.

As a home side I wanted to take the game to the opposition, and I’m pleased to say it worked out.

I am unhappy and disappointed with our performance.

The spirit and energy from the opponent showed us what you need to do in an FA Cup game.

Our spirit and energy, on the ball and off the ball, was not enough to win.

We always need too long time to get in the right position.

We need to come quicker in the right position where we have more space and more time.

We lose so simple balls in both halves and this was not like a Championship team and we have to speak about this game with the boys.

It was amazing, the fans cheered us on the whole way and that’s what we want to hear at Fratton Park.

You are playing against a team in the Championship, we want to show we can get there and match them – we did that.

We were compact, nice and tight, when we needed to make a challenge we did, we didn’t pussyfoot about and got rid of it when we needed to.

I have to say, we were lucky not to concede an equaliser when they had a great chance to score, then I got one two minutes later.

We deserved the win in the end because we battered them all over the pitch.

We could have got more, we had a couple more chances, and I’m just glad we’re in the next round.

Brilliant Pompey destroyed Barnsley to march into the fifth round of the FA Cup.

It was arguably the finest display of the season from Kenny Jackett's side as they claimed a 4-2 triumph over the Championship side.

Andy Cannon was the driving force with a man-of-the-match showing, yet there were so many outstanding performances.

That's two defeats in 21 matches in all competitions as the Blues maintain impressive momentum.

Jordan Cross – Pompey writer

What a display of attacking quality that was from Kenny Jackett’s men.

The Blues tore apart Championship side Barnsley with a display of real cutting edge.

There’s been many times this season when Pompey haven’t turned superiority into a more tangible reward.

Well, they certainly made their most of their dominance to march on in the FA Cup with the team’s confidence now at a season’s high.
