Portsmouth boss Kenny Jackett declares interest in Barnsley and former Luton midfielder

But the Pompey boss conceded the uncertain financial landscape amid the coronavirus crisis makes it difficult to commit to a swoop for the midfielder at this moment in time.

McGeehan moved to Fratton Park on loan from Barnsley in January. He scored two goals in 15 appearances before the shutdown of the campaign.

The ex-Luton ace has admitted he was told he's surplus to requirements at the Tykes ahead of his switch to PO4.

Although he has a year remaining on his Oakwell deal, he expects to depart this summer.

McGeehan is held in high regard by Jackett, who’s been impressed with his contributions at Pompey.

While the Blues manager would be keen to extend the 25-year-old's south-coast stay, he's unsure what sort of transfer kitty he’ll be working with this summer.

Jackett’s facing the prospect of his playing budget being slashed as the economic reality of the Covid-19 crisis bites.

Nevertheless, McGeehan is still someone Pompey are keen to pursue if possible.

Jackett said: ‘We would be interested but what next season looks like financially is not clear yet.

‘While our people put together several different projections, until we actually do know what next season looks like then it’s very difficult to commit to any type of budget.

‘But, for myself as a manager, would I be interested in Cameron next season? Yes I would, 100 per cent I would.

‘He’s still a Barnsley player and has a year left on his contract with them. They’ll be doing their own planning and I don’t know what that will be.

‘They’ll be similar to us and waiting for what season looks like.

‘We have been pleased with him and, for Cam, I do think that there is more to come, so it would be an interesting signing.’

McGeehan joined Barnsley in 2017 and helped them to League One promotion last season.

However, he slipped down the pecking order when Gerhard Struber succeeded Daniel Stendel as manager in November.

McGeehan's enjoyed his time at Pompey, though. He’s settled down well, while he has roots in the area with his grandmother living in Portchester.

Jackett added: ‘We’ll see what next season looks like for us and for any club.

‘For Cameron, he has enjoyed it here and he has liked his time at Pompey.’
