Portsmouth loan midfielder and ex-Luton favourite Cameron McGeehan gives big update on his Barnsley future

The midfielder is currently on loan for the remainder of the season at Pompey, having joined from the Tykes in January.

McGeehan had fallen out of favour at Oakwell after Gerhard Struber took over as manager in November. He was omitted from eight match-day squads before moving to Fratton Park.

The ex-Luton man has been a prominent member of Kenny Jackett’s side’s League One promotion push since his arrival, however.

He scored two goals in 15 appearances before the suspension of the season.

Speaking to The Next Step podcast, McGeehan revealed he’s likely to depart Barnsley for pastures new at the end of the campaign.

As reported by The News, all four current loanees – McGeehan, Ross McCrorie, Sean Raggett and Steve Seddon – would be open to the idea of a permanent move if a deal could be agreed.

However, the former Northern Ireland under-21 international is firstly prioritising helping the Blues make a return to the Championship for the first time since 2012.

McGeehan said: ‘Obviously, I’m going to go back to Portsmouth (when the season restarts) and I’d love to get promoted here because it’s an amazing club and I’ve really enjoyed my time here.

‘It would be really good if we got promoted here. I think I’ve got a year left (on his contract) at Barnsley and I think I’ll probably leave there either way from the conversations that I’ve had with them.

‘Then it’s about going to the next club depending on how well I do at Portsmouth – that’s where I’m going to end up.

‘That’s the thing with football, you’re only as good as your last game.

‘I’ve got to have a big 10 games to finish the season and then see what happens.

‘I’m a believer of everything happening at the right time for a reason and I think it’s all down to the 10 games that are coming up and then I’ll see what happens in the summer.’
