After a slow beginning to the season, the Aussie has established himself as an important member of the manager’s plans this term.

He’s started the Blues’ past six games – not including Tuesday night’s Papa John’s Trophy game against West Ham under-21s – and been key to helping Pompey turn their fortunes around.

Williams is yet to score this campaign, something that both the player and manager will be keen to rectify.

However, his work-rate, commitment, energy and link-up play certainly makes up for a lack of goals at this moment in time, with the former Rotherham ace also chipping in with four assists so far this term.

His adaptability has also impressed, with the 27-year-old even finding himself playing up top alongside striker John Marquis in recent games as he swaps roles with Marcus Harness.

Yet it’s the winning mentality that Williams has brought to the team in recent weeks which has not gone undetected by Jackett.

His six starts since the 1-0 home defeat to Doncaster Rovers in mid-October have contributed to five victories.

Prior to that, his three other appearances in the starting XI saw the Blues win two of those games.

Not a bad ratio when you consider that Pompey have won just three of the eight games Williams has not started.

It’s a record the manager is keen to build on as he identifies the Australia international’s recent form as something he can make the most of.

Jackett said: ‘Ryan is having a good spell and it’s good to get him and Marcus Harness into the side.

‘They bring different strengths and combine very well.

‘There is some confidence playing in the side at the moment and I'm sure he can continue, remain committed and there's more to come in terms of his performances.

‘He'll want to score but I always think Ryan is a part of a winning occasion. He brings a lot to the club and to the team.

‘He gets into some good positions and is very much part of a winning equation,

‘I do find Ryan is pretty popular (among fans) and inside the club. The players both appreciate and rate him.’
