The Pompey boss won't feel aggrieved his side will miss out on two automatic places in the Championship despite being in the mix before the coronavirus crisis took hold.

The fourth-placed Blues trailed Rotherham, in second, by just two points with nine games remaining.

Jackett’s men are also seven points adrift of leaders Coventry having played a game more.

League One clubs are expected to vote on how to conclude the 2019-20 season later this week.

Swindon, Crewe and Plymouth will be promoted, while there will be the usual four-team end-of-season play-off consisting of Cheltenham, Exeter, Colchester and Northampton, subject to EFL ratification.

A similar scenario could be used in the third tier, although an extended eight-club play-off has been mooted.

Pompey would be involved in both, regardless, while Coventry and Rotherham will seal returns to the Championship.

And although both clubs could still have been caught, Jackett admitted the Blues couldn't complain.

He said: ‘I don't think so (you can feel aggrieved) because there's nothing that anybody could have done.

‘We had to stop the season. The whole world basically stopped, the country stopped so it's obviously for good reasons.

‘Then you are where you are in the table – you have to accept that.

‘Yes, maybe we could have caught them but maybe we wouldn’t have.

‘For us, you just have to accept that we weren’t in the top two when the season stopped and that's it.

‘It does seem like there'll be a return with what's happened in League Two.

‘We’ll see what happens when all of the divisions put their proposals together and then the EFL can make sure everything is in place for it to flow accordingly.

‘Some type of play-off system does look favourite at the moment.’
