The 20-year-old had a severe depressive episode last week and attempted to take his own life after posting a suicide note on social media.

When he regained consciousness at Queen Alexandra Hospital, he discovered that Marquis wanted to talk to him.

The pair conversed at length on the phone, with George crediting the ex-Doncaster forward for saving his life.

Jackett's known Marquis since he was a youngster, having worked together at Millwall earlier in their respective careers.

And the Pompey boss is not surprised the 28-year-old acted in such a selfless manner.

Jackett said: ‘We were aware and were very pleased with what John did.

‘It was great responsibility he showed. People maybe look at footballers (in a certain way) but John is a father of two and would always try to help people and, in particular, be aware of supporters who he can do everything he can for.

‘It is a terrific thing. Sometimes these things get publicised and sometimes they don’t.

‘But John has done a very, very good thing and he deserves a lot of credit for it.

‘John’s got a good personality and obviously has a young family himself. That does change your perspective, definitely.

‘He’s got a very good attitude and it is no surprise that he would put himself forward to help someone like that.’

Marquis joined Pompey from Doncaster for a substantial fee last summer.

The marksman has bagged 14 times in 46 appearances this season.

And with the Blues potentially meeting Oxford in the play-offs should the 2019-20 campaign be curtailed, Jackett reckons Marquis’ goal threat will be key.

The manager added: ‘We’d liked to think he’d get to 20 if we play our remaining games.

‘If there are big games ahead for this season, which it looks like there might be, you need your big players to be able to do that.

‘John is one of those. He’s our top scorer and if there is an opportunity to get back then it would be great if he can come up with some key goals again.’
