The Blues put on an unconvincing display against League One bottom club MK Dons at Fratton Park this afternoon.

Nonetheless, it resulted in a 2-1 triumph, making it three victories in eight days.

Pompey had to rely on man-of-the-match Jack Whatmough, keeper Craig MacGillivray and the rest of the defence to keep out the impressive visitors.

Certainly MK Dons would have felt hard done by with the final outcome.

But Jackett hailed the defensive might of his Pompey side, who now sit ninth in League One.

He told The News: ‘I felt we had to dig deep, particularly from 2-1 up. It was an excellent defensive display.

‘They had one chance in the second half, Craig made a great save, while we had a really big chance with Ellis Harrison and their keeper made a good save with his legs as well.

‘We had to dig deep, we had to defend, we probably gave away too many free-kicks, there were a lot of balls into our box, and a lot of corners as well against us.

‘We really had to defend.

‘It looks an open division so far, we are pleased to get a couple of wins in the last eight days, different types of games.

‘At Rochdale we played well but didn’t put them away, you have to, that’s part of winning on a regular basis.

‘Today was rearguard action where we defended superbly. There are different ways of winning.

‘Would we have liked to have imposed ourselves more on the game? Of course we would.’
