The News understands the Blues are in talks to capture an experienced performer in a deal for the remainder of the campaign.

It is believed Danny Cowley is confident of reaching an agreement for the player, although his anticipated signing will not be in time to be considered for tonight’s clash with Charlton (7.45pm).

Pompey’s head coach has also been seeking a midfield addition late in the transfer window, although hopes of pulling off such a recruit are now fading.

The Blues had looked at Rotherham’s Jamie Lindsay, although were unable to pursue that particular target.

So far in this January transfer window, Cowley has recruited Hayden Carter and Tyler Walker on loan, while Denver Hume and Ollie Webber have been signed.

A total of seven players have departed, including John Marquis, Ellis Harrison, Lee Brown, Miguel Azeez and Gassan Hassan, with Alex Bass and Paul Downing leaving on loan.
