Portsmouth defender Christian Burgess wins PFA award

Christian Burgess has been crowned the PFA Bristol Street Motors League One Player of the Month for January.

The Pompey centre-back topped a fans’ poll, which was run by fan-engagement experts Snack Media.

Burgess collected 46 per cent of votes cast, beating Gillingham’s John Akinde, Rotherham’s Dan Barlaser, Sunderland’s Chris Maguire, Coventry’s Sam McCallum and Peterborough’s Ivan Toney to the prize.

The popular defender made eight appearances as the Blues went unbeaten last month.

Burgess scored Pompey’s match-winner in the 1-0 win at Bolton, as well as the 4-2 FA Cup triumph over Barnsley.

The monthly prize goes to a Blues player for a third successive month, after Ronan Curtis clinched the gong in November and December.
