The incident happened during the Blues’ 2-0 win over Cardiff City at Fratton Park

Pompey have launched an investigation into Saturday’s incident between a home supporter and a Cardiff City player.

And the club have confirmed Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary are also holding enquiries following the second-half altercation in the Blues’ 2-0 victory.

Cardiff defender Krystian Bielik confronted a young Pompey fan in the South Stand while attempting to retrieve the ball for a throw-in in the 72nd minute.

Bluebirds head coach Brian Barry-Murphy afterwards claimed Bielik was ‘slapped in the face’, while footage on social media appears to show the footballer grabbing the youngster around his upper body.

Bielik was not punished by referee Ben Speedie, although the supporter was shown out of the stadium by match-day stewards.

Pompey have now confirmed they are investigating, although have ‘urged caution against speculation’ while enquiries progress.

‘As this remains a safeguarding matter and is currently under investigation by both the club and the police, it would be inappropriate for us to comment further on the circumstances at this time.

‘However, we are aware that a number of claims and assertions are circulating on social media. We would urge caution against speculation while enquiries are ongoing.

‘The welfare and safeguarding of young people are of paramount importance to Portsmouth Football Club.

‘We will continue to liaise with the relevant parties as enquiries progress. No further comment will be made at this stage while investigations remain ongoing.’

Bielik was replaced by Calum Scanlon in the 89th minute and was escorted along the South Stand touchline by a club steward and a member of Cardiff’s backroom staff.

The FA have acknowledged they are aware of the incident and will review the details in the referee’s match report.
