'They're on the floor, on their knees' - Portsmouth January transfer window demand made to help 'lift the place'

Pompey fans are still waiting for the Blues’ first signing of the January transfer window

Pompey have been urged to kickstart their January transfer window recruitment drive.

The News’ chief sports writer Neil Allen believes the welcoming sight of a new signing at Fratton Park is desperately needed - just to give everyone associated with the club a much-needed lift.

Thirteen days have now passed since the winter trading block opened for business, with the Blues anticipated to bring in up to six new recruits this month to help boost their Championship survival chances.

Yet the Fratton faithful are still waiting for Pompey to show their hand during this crucial period in the campaign. Indeed, the loan departure of Spurs youngster Minhyeok Yang is the only bit of concrete business Pompey have concluded as we approach the halfway point of the window.

For some supporters, their patience is starting to wear thin as John Mousinho’s side sit just one point and one place above the drop zone, albeit with two games in hand on third-from-bottom Norwich.

It also comes as the countdown to Saturday’s huge game at Sheffield Wednesday gathers pace. Fans were told after the New Year’s Day humiliation at Bristol City that new players will have arrived before that trip to Hillsborough.

There is, of course, still plenty of time for that to happen.

But as the wait continues, Allen felt the need to spur the Blues into action so that they could provide some much-needed positivity among the fans.

Pompey: they’re on the floor, on their knees, with more and more injuries

Speaking on the latest episode of Pompey Talk, The News writer said: ‘I'm not criticizing the club for not immediately signing players in the first week of the window. Not many clubs have. In any transfer window, a chunk of it happens at the very end, particularly in January.

‘I'm more concerned about them getting the right calibre and the right quality of players to make a difference to that first team and make it better.

‘Having said that, they need to add to it before Sheffield Wednesday. They need some reinforcements because there’s a big week coming up.

‘They definitely need someone, just to lift the fans, lift the team, add numbers, add quality hopefully.

‘At the moment, Pompey just need something. They're on the floor, on their knees. with more and more injuries.

‘Sunday should have been all about the positivities because of the performance. But afterwards, unfortunately, it's all been forgotten about because we're talking about three set-piece goals and two injuries.

‘So, they just need something, Pompey - a quality player to come in, just to lift the place.’
