Portsmouth title-winner and ex-Carlisle man on the move again - and crowned instant hero after stunning debut

The ex-Carlisle man scored once in 18 appearances during his time at Fratton Park

A Pompey League One title-winner enjoyed a stunning debut after inspiring his new club to a remarkable comeback.

Stockport County paid the Blues an undisclosed fee to land Owen Moxon just 12 months ago - now he has moved again during the current transfer window.

Following just 18 league starts for the Hatters, he has joined fellow League One side Wigan on a season-long loan.

It reunites Moxon with former Fratton Park team-mate Christian Saydee, having both been part of John Mousinho’s 2023-24 squad which captured the League One crown.

Dramatic debut

Struggling Doncaster had established a comfortable 3-0 lead after 60 minutes, putting them on track for a crucial three points in their battle to avoid relegation to League Two.

However, Joe Taylor and Callum Wright both scored in a six-minute spell to reduce the deficit to 3-2, sparking a nervy finale for the Keepmoat Stadium faithful.

Sure enough, on 87 minutes, Fraser Murray’s corner was headed home by debutant Moxon to complete an incredible fightback and secure an improbable point.

Wigan themselves are just two points ahead of the relegation zone, with Saydee having scored twice in 29 appearances since joining from Pompey in June 2025 for an undisclosed fee.

Indeed, his last goal came against Stockport on August 30 during a 1-1 draw - 21 games ago. Although he has registered four assists for the 19th-placed side since that moment.

As for Moxon, the Wigan switch represents the opportunity for regular first-team football after slipping out of starting contention for high-flying Stockport.

However, despite season-ending injury to fellow midfielders Joe Morrell and Alex Robertson, he was in and out of Mousinho’s team in the second half of that campaign, making 15 appearances, of which eight were starts.

Pompey goal of the season

Although he did weigh in with a memorable equaliser against promotion rivals Derby in April 2024, to secure a crucial 2-2 draw.

Later voted as Pompey’s Goal of the Season, Moxon came off the bench and let fly with a superb 77th-minute equaliser which continued to keep the Rams at arm’s length in the push for the title.

When the Blues were crowned champions 14 days later in a 3-2 triumph over Barnsley, Moxon was the only outfield player not used from the bench.

He subsequently made 12 Championship appearances for Mousinho’s men, including starts against Norwich and Bristol City, during the opening half of last season.

However, a substitute outing in the New Year’s Day 2025 hammering of Swansea would prove to be the midfielders’ final outing before being sold to Stockport.

In total, he made 28 appearances in all competitions for the Blues, of which 11 were starts, while Derby remained his only goal.

Now after 46 outings for Stockport, where he also scored once, he has moved to Wigan - and already opened his goal account in the most dramatic of circumstances.
