Horror moment sees Hull City deliver Portsmouth smash-and-grab victory
Hull City carried out a Fratton Park smash-and-grab win - thanks to Adrian Segecic’s moment of madness.
The Aussie gifted the three points to the promotion chasers with a dreadful double error 17 minutes from time, with sub Matt Crooks profiting for the visitors.
It meant Pompey came away empty handed from a match they dominated for virtually its entirety, on an immensely frustrating afternoon at PO4.
John Mousinho’s men clocked up 21 shots on goal, had the lion’s share of possession and had 11 corners - but couldn’t hit the back of the net.
It means it’s back-to-back home defeats for Pompey, with the match following a similar pattern to their last Fratton loss to Sheffield United.
Nico Schmid came to Pompey’s rescue inside a minute with a superb reaction stop to deny Joe Gelhardt, with Oli McBurne offside as he put in the loose ball.
From there it was all Pompey with Zak Swanson’s 25-yard thump turned around the post by Ivor Pandur a couple of minutes later.
Pompey then had a strong penalty appeal turned down as Pandur spilled Terry Devlin’s drive and Colby Bishop appeared to be impeded by Charlie Hughe, as he attempted to reach the loose ball. Ref Sam Allison was well placed but didn’t give the spot-kick.
Regan Poole had an acrobatic six-yard effort turned around the post before the keeper gathered Swanson’s 20 yarder in the 21st minute.
The Blues were asking all the questions with Adrian Segecic dragging his shot wide as he ran at Hughes.
Alli then drove a shot at the near post which Pandur saved before the lively Devlin’s effort was deflected wide 10 minutes before the break.
Bishop’s shot was then turned around the post by the busy Hull keeper, with it one-way traffic but Pompey not finding the goal return for their dominance.
The pattern of the game continued after the restart, with John Mousinho’s side asking all the questions.
The Blues were dominating possession without creating as many openings as the first half.
Then came a dagger blow with 17 minutes - with Segecic the man to blame as Hull took the lead.
The Aussie gifted the ball to Lundstram and then played Schmid woefully short when the ball ricocheted back to him. Sub Crooks was the man to accept the gift and fire home.
Devlin’s 20-yard drive was deflected wide and Pack headed Segecic’s corner over, as Pompey tried to muster a reply.
But there was to be no way through for the home side through seven minutes of stoppage time, on a Fratton afternoon where the points were thrown away.
