Marezi magic as gutsy Portsmouth secure hard-fought Norwich City triumph
Pompey secured a 1-0 win against Norwich City at Carrow Road on Saturday.
Pompey continued their Southampton bounce back with a gutsy win against Norwich City on Saturday.
Summer signing Marko Milovanovic’s second-half penalty proved to be the difference for John Mousinho’s troops, who have now claimed six points out of a possible nine since the international break.
The Blues boss named an unchanged side following Wednesday’s 3-2 triumph against Sheffield United, with Daniel Bielica and Ben Killip both named on the bench amid the ongoing injury crisis at Fratton Park.
It was an incredibly tame start to the proceedings at Carrow Road, with the visitors enjoying the majority of possession in the first half.
Despite their large spell on the ball, Mousinho’s men were unable to unlock the Norwich backline as frustrations grew amongst the home supporters.
The first effort came from Pompey, however, on 36 minutes, when Ryan Kavuma-McQueen was released by the impressive Iyad Mohamed on the left wing.
The Chelsea loanee wiggled his way through a number of challenges before unleashing an effort which fired well over the bar.
Cheers did ring around Carrow Road soon after when Ruairi McConville struck an effort from 30-yards, representing the first shot on target, but it was comfortably saved by Nicolas Schmid.
That prompted a frantic finish to the first half, when Kamara found space before driving into the box, where he played a ball across to Adrian Segecic. But, the Croatian was unable to test Dan Grimshaw in goal after his attempt was blocked by McConville.
The Canaries did have one last attempt before the break, when Anis Ben Slimane also tried his luck from range, but couldn’t test the Pompey keeper.
But just moments after the break, Mousinho’s troops were given a fabulous chance to take the lead when Jacob Wright clipped Abu Kamara in the box.
And Marezi, who had been quiet in the first half, was able to capitalise from the spot as he sent Grimshaw the wrong way to give Pompey the lead.
The Blues did come under some pressure after taking the lead with substitutes Lucien Mahovo, Darlin Yongwa and Paris Meghoma making impacts from the bench.
After riding the initial wave of pressure, Mousinho’s troops did have a chance to double the lead when Kamara played through Segecic after a brilliant find by Dia.
The Croatian found himself one-on-one with Grimshaw before McConville came in with a perfectly-timed tackle to allay the danger.
With 12 minutes to go, Pelle Mattsson fired an effort, which beat the fully stretched Schmid, but his 20-yard strike ricocheted off the post and away from danger.
Second-half substitute Mathias Kvistgaarden came close when he fired just wide, having received the ball on the edge of the box.
The Blues had to work for the points after a late onslaught by Philippe Clement’s side. The hosts put Mousinho’s men under immense pressure, but were unable to find a breakthrough in stoppage time.
The triumph lifts Pompey up to 13th in the standings, having claimed six points out of nine since the international break.
