Academy lad makes mark as multi-million pound signing's Portsmouth career begins at Bristol Rovers

Brandon Downey’s first senior goal earned Pompey’s 1-1 pre-season draw at Bristol Rovers.

The Northern Ireland academy lad’s finish cancelled out Fabrizio Cavegn’s second-half effort at the Memorial Stadium.

Pompey were given a decent test of their credentials by Steve Evans’ men, as Rocco Shein made his Blues bow following his high-profile move from Fredrikstad FK.

There was also a second-half triallist on show, as the Blues’ build-up for the campaign went up a gear.

Adrian Segecic won a soft free-kick early on, but John Swift fired at Brad Young.

Harvey Blair then fouled former Pompey academy lad Tommy Blair, but he fired into the wall.

Terry Devlin was back in the team and whistled a 25 yarder just over after 10 minutes.

The home side were offering a decent test of the Blues’ credentials and hit the bar three minutes late, with Riley Harbottle looping a shot on to the woodwork.

Then a superb driving run from Jordan Willaims ended with Eoin Kenny firing over.

Macauley Southam-Hales produced a fine last-ditch tackle to deny Blair in the 20th minute, as he was put clear by Segecic.

Nine minutes before the break Williams produced a wonderful defence-splitting pass with the outside of his boot with Kenny cutting the ball back, but Harbottle produced a fine late block as he was about to pull the trigger.

A triallist came on for Pompey at half-time in place of Terry Devlin, with Ben Killip replacing Schmid.

The game sprung to life as Colby Bishop’s deft flick hit the bar from Kenny’s cross, before Killip saved at point-blank range from Forde and dived full length to his right to push away Leigh’s drive.

The home side took the lead in the 57th minute as Fabrizio Cavegn drove a low effort inside the post from outside the box.

The game was then broken up by a swathe of subs before Pompey levelled 13 minutes from time.

The Pompey triallist produced a nice run and shot which Luke Southwood saved, but academy lad Brandon Downey was there to snaffle away the loose ball.

That was the last action of a useful pre-season outing for Mousinho’s men.
