Portsmouth winger dealt devastating blow after horror training ground injury
Luke Brooke-Smith has been dealt a devastating blow after dislocating his ankle.
The Pompey winger is facing a lengthy stint on the sidelines, following the incident in training yesterday.
Brooke-Smith suffered the horrific setback from the contact incident, which also saw him hit with a leg fracture and ‘significant’ ligament damage.
The 18-year-old was rushed to Queen Alexandra Hospital where he was discharged last night, with surgery now the likely option.
Blues boss John Mousinho confirmed the injury this afternoon, with Brooke-Smith expected to miss up to 12 weeks as a result of the ligament damage alone.
The Pompey boss said: ‘Unfortunately we’ve picked up a new injury in training - a really unfortunate one.
‘Luke Brooke-Smith has dislocated his ankle, and it’s quite a severe dislocation.
‘Off the back of that there’s a fracture to his fibula and relatively significant damage to his ligaments as well.
‘It was just a really unfortunate incident in training.
‘It was dealt with really well and swiftly by the medical department.
‘We got him up to QA and he was discharged relatively late last night.
‘We’re going to wait two or three days and he’s getting an MRI and CT scan tomorrow.
‘He’ll probably go in for surgery off the back of that.
‘It’s a really unfortunate one for Luke and we’re all willing him to get back quickly.
Mousinho acknowledged the disappointment Brooke-Smith will be facing, after the New Zealand international’s promising start to life in England after his his arrival from Wellington Phoenix in July.
He added: ‘Luke’s exceeded expectations from where we thought he’d been, coming in as a young lad who’s just turned 18 and making his senior debut.
‘He’s been playing games and looking really effective, so we’re gutted for him first and foremost because of the injury and it restricting his playing time.
‘But I think he’ll be back, hopefully quicker than we initially thought when we first saw the injury - because it didn’t look great.
‘He’s a young lad who’s fit, young and strong - he’ll come back a lot stronger.’
