Portsmouth into the Championship play-offs after late Millwall drama in Fratton rain
Thomas Waddingham’s late winner sent Pompey into the play-offs against Millwall.
The Aussie put his wretched injury pain to bed to give his side a comeback 2-1 success in the Fratton Park rain.
And that lifts John Mousinho’s side into the Championship top eight ahead of this afternoon’s fixtures.
Nico Schmid’s gifted Jenson Metcalfe an early opener before Lyndon Dykes diverted the ball past his own keeper.
The incessant rain and surface water played its role in the game amid Storm Boelo, but Waddingham’s late intervention sent the majority of the 20,476 crowd home happy.
Millwall started the game much the brighter with Nico Schmid coming from his box and clearing amid hesitancy, with Camiel Neghli firing the lose ball wide from long range.
Schmid gifted the visitors a sixth-minute lead from the resulting goal kick, as the ball was played short to the Austrian and he passed the ball straight to Jenson Metcalfe, who fired the ball straight past the keeper.
Pompey were level nine minutes later as Adrian Segecic’s near-post corner was diverted past Max Crocombe by Lyndon Dykes.
The rain was teeming down with the surface water evident in and around the Milton End penalty area.
Ryan Kavuma-McQueen produced some lovely trickery through the splashes mid-way through the half but his cross was cleared.
Segecic’s dead-ball deliveries were causing concern for the visitors, but Pompey were unable to get the final touch to the Croat’s dangerous corners.
The rain became heavier at the start of the second half with no changes after the restart.
Millwall assumed control as the second half progressed, with Pompey not quite getting their final pass right with their moments of threat.
Neghli volleyed over from a corner midway through the second half after a brilliant double block for Dia, before Tyrese Shade and Ebou Adams were introduced for Kavuma-McQueen and Segecic.
Shade’s low 20-yard drive was parried by Crocombe with 19 minutes left, with Milovanovic unable to force home the loose ball and harshly booked for a foul on Tristan Crama.
Sub Thomas Waddingham and Poole then couldn’t force home Swanson corner, before Adams’ cross flashed across the face of goal.
Waddingham then put Pompey in front with eight minutes remaining, though he maybe didn’t know much about it! Shade’s shot was blocked with the ball cannoning past Crocombe after a touch by Cooper on to the Aussie.
Pompey saw the game out impressively through four minutes of stoppage time, with Adams even being denied what looked a late penalty.
