‘We look after each other’: Terry Devlin salutes Portsmouth unity amid heated Wolves scenes

Terry Devlin lauded Pompey’s togetherness amid their heated Wolves fightback.

And the Molineux goal hero is certain the unity shown on and off the pitch by the Blues is exactly what the Fratton faithful want to see.

Devlin’s superb 86th-minute volley delivered a spirited 1-1 draw against the side relegated from the Premier League last term.

It was a result which showed plenty of character, something Mousinho’s men have displayed to pick up seven points from nine following the disappointing south-coast derby defeat to Southampton.

Exchanges took place between the two dugouts throughout the game, with tempers boiling over following the full-time whistle as Mousinho and Wolves boss Cesar Peixoto clashed.

Mousinho was backed by defender Zak Swanson as a fracas ensued, before players and staff were given a rapturous reception by the 2,000 travelling Pompey supporters.

Devlin feels the spirit in the Blues camp was in evidence against Wolves - and he’s confident that will be received well.

He said: ‘It’s unbelievable and I’m really proud of the group.

‘When things got messy at the end we were all sticking together as a group. We showed that fight and desire.

‘I think that’s everything our fans look for in a team.

‘They’ll all agree we look like a good, strong team who all really get along with each other with all that there.

‘It’s really important for us, especially with the last number of years when we’ve gone on one and two-game winning streaks and then got turned over easily when we’ve come away.

‘I think we’ve now got ourselves to a stage now where we can make one or two changes and the players who come in are bang on it.

‘Absolutely (the players and staff back each other on and off the pitch). It’s a strong group and a really close group - staff and players combined.

‘We all get on with each and we all look after each other.’

Devlin reacted superbly to deliver the point for Pompey taking Adrian Segecic’s free-kick on his knee and delivering an unerring finish, after it had cannoned into the Wolves wall.

It gave the 22-year-old another moment to savour on his return to John Mousinho’s starting XI.

He added: ‘These are the sort of moments you dream of as a young kid.

‘We all want to score goals and even as a defender there’s no better feeling than scoring.

‘I think what tops it even more is doing it in front of a packed-out away end. To do that is unbelievable.

‘I’m a midfielder turned into a right-back but I feel I have the quality to score goals like that. To be able to express those qualities and get my name on the scoresheet is something I’m really happy with.’
