Portsmouth rivals sign former Southampton winger as Aston Villa make loan call on Sheffield United man
The latest transfer headlines involving Pompey and their Championship rivals.
There are less than six weeks to go until the January window opens for business and it’s once again expected to be busy for Pompey.
John Mousinho’s men have had a slow start to the new campaign and head into this Saturday’s Championship contest against Bristol City just two points above the relegation zone.
Elsewhere, there is plenty of transfer gossip and speculation doing the rounds across the Championship, with the clock ticking to the upcoming January window.
Here are the latest headlines involving the Blues and their second-tier rivals.
Owls swoop for Redmond
Sheffield Wednesday have delved back into the free-agent market to complete the signing of former Southampton forward Nathan Redmond.
After confirming the arrival of Liam Cooper on a free transfer earlier this month, the Owls were given permission by the EFL to further add to their squad, despite being in administration.
The winger, who has been without a club since July after departing Burnley following their promotion to the Premier League, has arrived on a short-term deal until January.
The 31-year-old spent the past two seasons at Turf Moor, but registered just one assist and no goals in 18 outings for the Clarets.
The one-cap England international enjoyed success with Pompey’s south-coast rivals Southampton, where he scored 30 goals and amassed 27 assists in 232 appearances in all competitions during a six-year stay at St Mary’s.
Sheffield United to lose Louie Barry

Aston Villa are expected to recall Louie Barry from an unsuccessful loan at Sheffield United in January.
After arriving on a season-long stint in the summer under former boss Ruben Selles, the midfielder has struggled for game time under new head coach Chris Wilder, registering just nine appearances.
But having been left out of the Blades previous five squads, including in Wednesday’s triumph over Pompey, Unai Emery’s men are expected to end his stay at Bramall Lane prematurely during the upcoming window.
That decision has put a host of Championship clubs on red alert, with BBC Sport suggesting Derby County, Hull City, Oxford United and Stoke City are keen to take the 22-year-old for the second-half of the campaign.
Barry impressed with Stockport County during the first half of last term, which saw him net 15 goals and register three assists in League One before the Premier League outfit called time on his stay at Edgeley Park,
After joining Hull City on loan last January, the ex-Barcelona and Ipswich Town man made just four outings before being ruled out for the remainder of the season through injury in February.
Wrexham eyeing Premier League midfielder
After a busy summer window, which saw the arrival of 13 new faces, Wrexham are expected to spend big in January as they continue to adapt to the Championship.
Indeed, Phil Parkinson’s men are believed to be setting their sights on a Premier League midfielder to strengthen the engine room.
After being heavily linked with West Ham’s Andy Irving during the summer, the Red Dragons have been once again tipped with a move for the 25-year-old.
West Ham insiders Claret and Hugh have suggested the north Wales outfit will reignite their interest in the Scottish talent, who looks set to be made available for a departure in the transfer window.
Wrexham currently sit eight points above Pompey after a promising start on their return to the Championship.
