‘A conversation to have’: Portsmouth boss’ big statement over upping transfer spending to compete in Championship
A huge issue covered by John Mousinho today - with spending transfer fees of £2-3m and competing in the Championship moving forward firmly under the microscope.
John Mousinho believes it’s reasonable to expect Pompey to hike their transfer spending this summer.
And the Blues boss acknowledged the club need to carefully assess where they’re headed in terms of playing and transfer budgets, if his side are to remain in the Championship this term.
Mousinho on increasing spending: ‘Conversation we have to make sure we have’
Pompey’s spending power has once again been under the spotlight, after a January window in which seven players were recruited. Four of those additions arrived on loan, two on permanent deals with Keshi Anderson joining as a free agent.
The Blues hierarchy made it clear there was funds available for other signings, with asking prices met for targets before valuations increased. The reality is, however, Pompey remain firmly in the relegation zone when it comes to divisional spending power.
The fee ceiling for a single player under the Eisners remains the £1.27m paid to Sydney FC for Hayden Matthews last year, with clear hopes from Mousinho the bar would have been raised from that last summer.
That never materialised, however, with the Pompey boss now stating he thinks it’s fair to expect £2-3m fees to be paid moving forward.
Mousinho feels there needs to be a ‘conversation’ about how things progress to allow his side to compete at the level, in the event of Pompey staying in the Championship for a third campaign.
He said: ‘Different sides came up last summer and the spending power changed, so what we thought may get us top-level Championship players in terms of fees and budgets maybe didn’t quite pan out.
‘So it’s an interesting one in terms of strategy for what we do in the summer.
‘We had a very different strategy for January, in terms of affecting the here and now. There’s a couple of players who are good for the future, but we want to affect the here and now.
‘We’d have to look at what it’s like competing in the Championship and operating as a model. Hopefully, if we’re in the Championship in the summer, we can go from there.
‘Yes, I think so (it’s reasonable to expect to spend £2-3m on players). It’s just a case of making sure we’re up to date on where the market is and where everyone else values a player.
‘We still want to bring in players for good value, but if we have to adjust and move the needle then we’ll do that. I think that’s a conversation we have to make sure we have as a club moving forward.’
Playing budget up ‘35-40 per cent’, transfer budget four-fold increase
Although Pompey never saw spending on a single player move in the levels Mousinho suggested a year ago, there was fees in and around £1m paid for Luke Le Roux, Mark Kosznovszky and Josh Knight.
The Blues head coach saw progress in the club’s overall spending power - citing a four-fold increase in transfer budget and the playing budget increasing between 35 and 40 per cent.
When it was suggested the club didn’t kick on in terms of spending last summer as expected, Mousinho added: ‘I think we did, I think we did kick on in the summer.
‘One of the things which happened was Birmingham, Wrexham and Charlton came up.
‘Certainly in Birmingham’s and Wrexham’s case, Wrexham spent £40m in the summer, Charlton £10m I think and Birmingham obviously were having a right go as well.
‘Our summer transfer budget was around four times what it was the previous year. So we definitely kicked on, but maybe it didn’t become what we thought it might growing year on year.
‘It was the same with the playing budget, which was increased significantly by around 35 or 40 per cent. But all of a sudden it didn’t lift you to where you previously felt you might be.’
