Portsmouth free agent transfer latest following new injury blow

Pompey are dealing with a lack of wingers, after news of Keshi Anderson’s injury lay-off. Here’s John Mousinho on dipping into the free agent market, as has been the case in previous seasons.

Pompey have scoured the free agent market for options in the wake of Keshi Anderson’s injury setback.

But John Mousinho believes there isn’t a suitable option worth recruiting at present, when it comes to the out-of-contract players available to the Blues.

Mousinho on free agents: ‘All time space is there, it’s an option’

Mousinho has indicated bringing in a new face outside of the transfer window will remain a live option, though, all the time there’s space open in his squad.

The News yesterday confirmed Pompey’s squad list details after its publication by the EFL, with details submitted in the wake of the transfer window’s close last week.

Two spaces were kept free in the 25-man senior group, with contracted under-21 players not counting towards that total.

Injured trio Harvey Blair, Josh Knight and Florian Bianchini were not registered, with Mousinho indicating that could change when their fitness picture improves.

Pompey did opt to negotiate the first half of the campaign with a space open, with the thinking that would allow a free agent to come in if it was deemed necessary.

That has been the case in Mousinho’s three years at PO4, with Lee Evans bolstering the League One title-winning campaign before Swedish defender Alexander Milosevic arrived last term.

The subject is once again a pertinent one with new boy Keshi Anderson joining the lengthy list of injuries at PO4, after being ruled out for up to eight weeks with a hamstring issue.

With the likes of Bianchini, Blair, Josh Murphy and Franco Umeh already missing, Pompey are looking light on wingers ahead of a busy run of games.

The Blues are unlikely to move for a free agent in that area, however, with Mousinho confirming available options have been considered.

The head coach did leave the door slightly ajar for that position to shift though, all the time there is a squad space allowing someone to come in.

Mousinho said: ‘We’ve had a look at the market and there’s nothing that particularly tickles our fancy at the minute.

‘All the time the space is there, though, it’s an option.

‘There’s not anyone there at the moment that we would be keen to bring in.

‘Yes we have (looked at wingers) and there’s nothing there we’d particularly want to bring in.

‘It depends (if that changes). If we have players back and available, we will fill that space with the players we have in the building.

‘We’re not keeping that space open for any other specific reasons, or to bring free agents in.’
