‘More than our entire transfer budget’: Portsmouth boss’ January window admission in battle to compete with Championship rivals

The reality of Pompey’s January transfer window challenges in the Championship are becoming increasingly clear.

John Mousinho admitted the Championship transfer market has mushroomed as Pompey aim to land signings capable of aiding their survival bid.

The head coach acknowledged rivals are splashing out more than his team’s entire spending budget on a single addition this season, as the transfer terrain markedly alters.

Pompey face a critical period, with Mousinho indicating up to six new additions could arrive before the close of winter trading on February 1.

They will be doing so against rivals with far deeper pockets, however, after the likes of Birmingham City and Wrexham altered the spending picture last summer.

A total of £269.2m was spent in the second tier, up from £226m in the summer of 2024 as Pompey arrived in the division as League One champions.

Mousinho explained around £1.6m was spent by Pompey in that initial period, before Hayden Matthews joined from Sydney FC for £1.27m last January - the most the club had spent since signing Erik Huseklepp for £1.5m in 2011.

Clubs buy one player for more than Pompey’s entire spending budget

Things were upped in the last window with Josh Knight, Mark Kosznovszky and Luke Le Roux all joining for fees in the region of £1m, but the reality is the Blues are still at the back of the spending field in the Championship.

When asked if the transfer market has shifted this season, Mousinho said: ‘It has changed.

‘When we first got into the Championship we looked at bringing a number of players in at the £200,000-£300,000 mark.

‘So we brought five or six of those for a total outlay of around £1.5-£1.6m, in that first summer. That’s where we were as a football club.

‘We then moved on in January and we moved on last summer, to spend a bit more on players.

‘That’s with the likes of Hayden (Matthews), Luke (Le Roux), Mark (Kosznovszky) and really try to add value there

‘The difficulty of the Championship now, particularly with the clubs who’ve come up and spent so heavily, is that’s inflated the market, because they’re really willing to go out and spend a huge amount of money on players.

‘A lot of the players who are brought in at this level, a single player, clubs will probably spend more than we have on our entire transfer budget.

‘That’s with us stepping things up year on year - and stepping things up pretty aggressively.

‘So that’s a difficulty, but we’re realistic about where we are in the pecking order and how we’re trying to compete.

‘We’re trying to compete in a different way, that’s why we’re trying to be creative in January.’
