Latest: Portsmouth call off chase for Sheffield Wednesday midfielder with eyes on South American winger

The latest on Pompey’s chase of the Sheffield Wednesday midfielder, at the transfer window’s finale.

Pompey have called time on their pursuit of Svante Ingelsson.

The News understands the Blues are now focussing their transfer attention away from the Sheffield Wednesday midfielder, as the transfer window reaches its climax.

Ingelsson was being chased with a bid rejected for the 24-year-old, as reinforcements are sought in the bid for John Mousinho’s men to retain their place in the Championship.

The £500,000-rated Swede is wanted by Millwall, with the likes of Derby County also said to be among Ingelsson’s second-tier admirers.

It’s believed the reasons for Pompey’s interest not accelerating are personal rather than financial, however, as attentions turn elsewhere.

Paraguayan winger Gustavo Caballero last night emerged as an attacking target, with the Santos man said to be arriving on loan with an option to make the 24-year-old’s Fratton stay permanent.

Caballero represents a leftfield option, in a period where Mousinho has stressed a requirement for players to come in who can make an immediate Championship impact.

It remains to be seen if South American football can prepare the Paraguay under-23 international for the English game, in the event of the £1.17m man arriving at PO4.

But Caballero certainly represents a potentially intriguing foray into a new market for Pompey, one few would’ve seen coming in the January window.

Dundee’s Luke Graham remains a target ahead of tomorrow’s 7pm deadline, with the 21-year-old featuring for the SPL side in their 0-0 draw with St Mirren yesterday.

Callum Lang’s Pompey future remains firmly under the spotlight at the climax to the winter window, with Preston North End pursuing a £1.75m deal.

Mousinho yesterday confirmed discussions are going on over an exit for the Scouser, though no official bid has been received from Deepdale.

The Pompey boss told The News: ‘There’s no movement on Callum, it was a football decision in terms of protecting him.

‘I’ll catch up with Rich (Hughes) and the board, but there’s nothing in terms of a bid accepted from our side.

‘There’s things rumbling on in the background, but the decision not to have Callum involved today was purely on football merit.

‘He’s trained all week so no problems there, so we’ll see how that pans out.

‘He was in yesterday so that hasn’t happened (he’d said his goodbyes to his team-mates). I do like these rumours, there’s quite a few from the training ground - but there’s nothing in that.

‘Yes (he’s still at the club), he would’ve have been doing his bits (at the training ground). When it comes to matchday, the players not in the squad will be professional and do their bits in and around the training ground.

‘Callum is very much committed to the football club - and very much still our player. We’ll see how that pans out over the next couple of days. If he’s still here Tuesday then great.’
