The sides have this morning been pitched together in a Sky-televised draw made by ex-Blues skipper Paul Merson.

Up until the start of last week, the Boro had been in the National League, only to receive a reprieve with Macclesfield instead taking their non-league place.

That sees Stevenage elevated into League Two this season – and involved in the Carabao Cup.

They will host Kenny Jackett’s men on the weekend of September 5-6.

The sides last met in the League Cup in August 2010, when Steve Cotterill took his side to the Lamex Stadium.

Pompey ran out 2-1 winners on that occasion, with Nadir Ciftci and Michael Brown getting the goals for the then-Championship side.
