Portsmouth keeper Duncan Turnbull on trial with Havant & Waterlooville

The American giant featured for Paul Doswell’s side’s first friendly of the summer ahead of the 2020-21 season.

Turnbull lined-up between the posts in their 3-1 victory over AFC Totton at the Snows Stadium.

He made a decent save on nine minutes to thwart Sam Griffen’s effort but couldn’t do anything to keep out Ethan Taylor’s opener moments later.

The Totton winger’s long-range effort took a wicked deflection which wrong-footed Turnbull and nestled into the bottom corner.

Nevertheless, he didn’t concede any further goals as he aims to clinch a loan move to Westleigh Park.

Turnbull signed professional terms with Pomey in March.

After an impressive month-long trial period, the University of Notre Dame graduate put pen to paper on a deal until the summer of 2021, with the club option for an additional 12 months.

The 22-year-old impressed playing college soccer Stateside. He was named in the All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Men’s Soccer Team for the 2019 season and selected by Houston Dynamos in the third round of the 2020 MLS SuperDraft.

Turnbull, who towers at 6ft 7in, is currently third-choice keeper at Pompey.

He’s behind No1 stopper Alex Bass and back-up Craig MacGillivray in the pecking order.

Kenny Jackett revealed the Blues had plans for Turnbull to head out to a non-league side on loan before the lockdown period amid the Covid-19 outbreak put paid to them.

The Pompey boss said at the time: ‘The ideal situation for Duncan would have been to go out and play men’s football before the end of the season, that’s what we were looking to do and perhaps play locally – but that didn’t happen.

‘Similarly, it will be an interesting year for him next season to see how he develops.

‘We didn’t have a club lined up. However, while it can be hard sometimes to get young goalkeepers out, he is so physically imposing and big I think people would have taken him.’
