It is understood that Mansfield, Crawley and Cambridge are all monitoring the midfielder over the possibility of a free transfer.

May has been informed he will be released by Pompey at the end of the season, despite signing a short extension in order to be available, if needed, for the Blues’ League One play-offs campaign.

The academy graduate made 30 appearances for the club, having made his debut in April 2015.

May spent the first half of this term on loan at Swindon but struggled to establish himself in their League Two title chase, making only 13 outings.

He returned to Fratton Park in January, before moving to Boreham Wood the following month.

May netted once in two games for the National League side before the season was cut short.

Despite the Wood preparing for the National League play-offs after the table was decided via an unweighted points-per-game formula, May is concentrating on his next move.

The talented central midfielder has potential suitors, including Mansfield, Crawley, Cambridge and Yeovil.

Former Wigan chairman David Sharpe is director of football at Mansfield.

He's been in touch with Paul Cook regarding May's ability, with the ex-Pompey boss giving the 22-year-old a glowing reference.

The Stags have already been active in the transfer window, signing striking duo Jordan Bowery and Jamie Reid from MK Dons and Torquay respectively as they plot their promotion charge from the fourth tier next season.

Meanwhile, Lee Bradbury is assistant head coach at Crawley and has been a long-time admirer of May, having tried to sign him on loan when in charge of the Hawks.

The 22-year-old had a trial with Crawley in January but a move failed to bear fruit.

Yeovil is another possible destination for May and promotion from the National League would boost their chances.
