Recruited on Thursday, the free agent has been involved in two Blues training sessions – and is now among the 18-man squad at the Stadium of Light.

He will have to wait for his opportunity, however, with Kenny Jackett retaining the starting XI which won 2-0 at Gillingham on Tuesday evening.

That outcome represented a third straight away win for the Blues in all competitions.

Today they will face a Sunderland side who have conceded one league goal in the season so far – and that came from the penalty spot.

Hiwula replaces Alfie Stanley on the bench, with the youngster returning to his loan arrangement at Bognor.

That signals the sole change to the side which won at the Priestfield Stadium, with Ellis Harrison still sidelined by a hamstring tear.

Pompey: MacGillivray, Johnson, Whatmough, Raggett, Brown, Williams, Naylor, Cannon, Jacobs, Harness, Marquis.

Subs: Bass, Pring, Close, Hiwula, Morris, Curtis, Nicolaisen.
