Portsmouth outline legal position in the face of EFL season being curtailed

But Blues chief executive Mark Catlin believes there are clubs in the third tier who could look for recourse in the event of the campaign not being completed on the pitch.

Pompey remain firmly in favour of playing out the remainder of the term on the pitch, with a voting process to decide the outcome expected to commence this week.

Waiting for the outcome looks likely to spill over into next month, however, as the saga continues to drag on.

The prospect of court action hangs over what will unfold with TV, commercial and sponsorship obligations not being fulfilled in the face of the 2019-20 season not continuing in the traditional fashion.

Peterborough owner, Darragh MacAnthony, has threatened to sue both the EFL and other clubs if his side are denied a play-off place through the league being decided on points per game.

He has since stepped down from that position, however, but believes he would be in a strong legal position if he took action against the league.

Catlin laid down Pompey’s position by stating he would not be keen to pursue a similar course of action, but he feels other clubs could well consider doing so.

He said: ‘There’s always potential legal ramification in anything people or businesses do.

‘It’s been said publicly some clubs would consider their positions on that.

‘But I can’t speak for those clubs, only ourselves.

‘It’s not really by nature as a board and a club something we would be comfortable with.

‘But every club can say never say never, and they have to reserve their position on that.’
