Director Andy Redman felt the miserable league form which saw the Blues’ play-off ambitions derailed couldn’t be overlooked anymore.

One league win in 14 had seen a toxic air seep into the Pompey fanbase, but it was the widening gap to the play-offs which was the decisive factor for the key decision makers.

With Cowley’s side languishing in 12th place in League One and seven points off the top six, Redman explained the board felt the time was right to act.

The Tornante president stated there was still hopes of making the play-offs, which was also a significant factor in making the call.

Redman said: ‘We had a very good relationship with Danny and Nicky Cowley, so you are never pleased to make these kind of decisions.

‘However, one win in 14 matches when, if like we are, you’re striving for promotion is just not good enough.

‘Football is a results business and we felt there was still a chance to make the play-offs.

‘We also felt like we’d originally put together some puzzle pieces that could make a good run this season, as was evidenced in August and September.

‘It wasn’t ideal, but we felt we had to make the right long-term decision in the best interests of Pompey.

Director Eric Eisner made it clear that, despite making the decision to call time on Cowley’s 22-month tenure, the board held the 44-year-old in high regard.

He added: ‘We have to give our respects to Danny and Nicky.

‘They were great guys and great for the club.

‘We all wish them the best and have nothing but good things to say about them.’READ MORE: Owners detail plans to expand training ground and academy.
