However, the 2019-20 campaign has been extended indefinitely from the FA's previous June 1 cut-off point.

That means this term’s going to run well into the summer, with uncertainty surrounding when it will end and the next will begin.

Nevertheless, Knight feels the correct choice has been made.

The Fratton Park hero said: ‘Obviously, the nation comes first and football comes second to that.

‘Once we get through all this, we have to try to finish the league whenever that might be.

‘If it runs into July or August then we finish it off and then look at next season. People will come up with an idea, maybe by shortening the season or having fewer cup games.

‘This season has to be finished as it leaves too many improbables, so if it’s six months down the line then it has to be.

‘The associations I image will be looking into the time frame because they’ll be looking to get the Euros played next year.’

Pompey are currently fourth in the League One table and two points outside the automatic promotion places.

As things stand, the Blues would be forced to play three extra games if they were to reach the Championship via the play-offs.

A Daily Telegraph report suggested Championship leaders Leeds and second-placed West Brom could go up automatically and there’d be a 22-team Premier League next season had this term been curtailed.

That may then have been replicated in League One and Two.

But Knight feels the Football League must endeavour to make the play-offs happen.

‘I think you have to try to play the play-offs,’ he added.

‘You’ll have to look at the timescale when football will start up again.

‘Ideally, you’d like to try to play them but if the season goes into July or August then maybe you have to look at whether you do make first, second and third automatic.

‘But you would have to know that be you restart the season so clubs know what they’re aiming at and aiming for.

‘People would have to accept that but hopefully it doesn't come to that.’
