The Blues were due to face League Two Salford at Wembley on Sunday, April 5, as they looked to win the trophy for a second consecutive season.

The Fratton faithful had snapped up more than 50,000 tickets for the game as they looked to take over the national stadium once again.

But because of coronavirus, the final was postponed as football went into lockdown.

Pompey, of course, returned to action last month to take their place in the League One’s end-of-season play-offs, after clubs voted to bring the season to a premature end.

That double-header was played behind closed doors – an approach which will continue when the Blues return for the start of the 2020-21 League One season on September 12.

Government plans are in place for fans to return to grounds in reduced numbers from October.

That means no decision on when the Leasing.com Trophy final will eventually take place with all supporters in attendance will be made until the autumn at the earliest.

In the meantime, though, the Blues have reassured fans that all tickets purchased will remain valid for any re-arranged date.

The club statement read: ‘Portsmouth Football Club would like to remind supporters about the current status of the Leasing.com Trophy final.

‘Kenny Jackett’s side were due to face Salford at Wembley Stadium on Sunday, April 5, but the match was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

‘More than 50,000 Blues fans bought tickets and the plan is for the game to take place when it is safe for spectators to attend.

‘All tickets will remain valid for the new date. Once this has been announced, fans who can no longer attend should contact the ticket office.’

Pompey fans received their Leasing.com Trophy final tickets in the post at the end of April.

The Blues have maintained throughout the Covid-19 pandemic that the final should be kept in mothballs until stadiums are allowed to accommodate supporters.
