Portsmouth see wage cap brought in after crucial EFL vote this afternoon

Members of League One and League One this afternoon voted in favour of a ceiling for the 2020-21 season with immediate effect.

That means Pompey will be working to a £2.5m squad limit in League One next term with £1.5m the figure in League Two.

It’s a blow for the Blues who have campaigned vigorously for a different approach to the blanket wage cap put on the table by the league.

A total of 16 of the 24 clubs in League One were required to support the proposal to see it passed.

And in the end, the EFL got the quota required, with 16 sides voting in favour of the measures, with seven objecting – including Pompey.

There was one abstention.

Pompey currently have a wage bill in the region of £4m, although players under contract are treated as being paid a divisional average of £1,300 per week.
