The Blues have won their fight for the wage ceiling that was introduced at the start of the 2020-21 season to be axed.

Chief executive Mark Catlin vehmently opposed the implementation of a £2.5m wage restriction on clubs in the third tier.

What’s more, it’s prevented Pompey from entering negotiations with 12 players whose contracts culminate at the end of the campaign.

They include quintet Tom Naylor, Andy Cannon, Jack Whatmough, Craig MacGillivray and Ryan Williams – who have all been key in the latest promotion push.

The Blues would only have been able to offer the divisional average of around £1,750 per week, which would have represented a significant pay cut.

However, the Professional Footballers’ Association immediately challenged the caps, saying they were ‘unlawful and unenforceable’, and an independent panel has today forced the caps to be withdrawn.

Now the Fratton faithful have urged the Blues to table fresh terms to the likes Naylor, Cannon and Co. to unsure they don’t move elsewhere.

Here's what fans have been reacting to the news on Twitter...

Quick give Naylor a fat new contract. Then sign everyone we can

@JAudley89

Personally have no issues with salary caps but should be linked to income & turnover of a club to stop over spending
