However, the German is keen to stay longer than the temporary terms presently being offered.

It is understood the Blues have already sounded out the former Barnsley boss to serve as caretaker for the remainder of the season.

Stendel is highly regarded following his time at Oakwell after leading them to promotion in 2018-19.

The Tykes finished in second spot behind Luton, although failed to beat Pompey in both fixtures between the teams that term.

However, he was controversially dismissed in October 2019, with the club struggling in the Championship.

Having managed at Hearts since then, Stendel is presently a free agent and could step into Fratton Park immediately.

It is believed the potential move appeals to the 46-year-old, who would welcome a return to England.

However, there is interest in his services from France, while he is reluctant to accept merely a deal until the end of the Blues’ current campaign.

Jackett had been at the Blues helm since June 2017.
