Portsmouth sent summer transfer message amid Championship relegation battle

Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman has shared his view on Portsmouth’s current situation

Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman believes it's paramount that Portsmouth improve their attacking options during the summer transfer window, following their struggles in the 2025/26 season.

Pompey have found a lifeline in the last week, with two impressive victories giving the club some breathing room in the Championship relegation battle.

With four games remaining in the campaign, Pompey are now four points clear of the relegation zone after wins over Middlesbrough and Ipswich Town.

Goodman says a lack of goals has been Pompey's issue this term, and he knows exactly what they should do in the summer.

Sky Sports pundit urges Pompey to make summer transfer decisions

Goodman, speaking exclusively to Portsmouth.co.uk via the home of the latest Casino News said: "Lack of goals for Portsmouth has been their biggest issue. Their best player has only started 12 games. That's Josh Murphy. And obviously, he was a massive reason why Colby Bishop had such a good season. Colby Bishop has scored only two, and one of them was a penalty. The other one was away at West Brom, and it was from across from Josh Murphy. One of the 12 games he started. In those 12 games that Josh Murphy has started, he's contributed six assists. So, Portsmouth just haven't had him at their disposal. And that's why they've struggled to score goals.

"Only three have scored less than Portsmouth. They're averaging one goal per game. 41 goals in 41 games. And if Josh Murphy had been fit for the whole season, I don't think they'd be in a relegation fight, if I'm honest with you."

On the summer window, Goodman added: "I think you've got to understand what Portsmouth are up against in the Championship. You know what they're competing against financially.

"They are one of the lower budgets in that league. And they're run efficiently, so they're not going to break the bank and spend crazy money. So, that's why it's been hard for them to really compete.

"There aren't really too many clubs that you'd look at that would be spending as little as Portsmouth on wages and on transfer fees, really. So, that's what they're fighting against. Got to be cute, got to be smart with the recruitment.

"But clearly, scoring more goals is going to be vital. In whatever league they play in next season, that is an area that will need to be improved."
