The Wembley final was due to be staged on Sunday, April 5, 2020, with more than 50,000 Pompey fans purchasing tickets for the fixture.

However, nine months on, the match is still to be played because of the impact of coronavirus.

A new date is also yet to be announced – although it will be played behind closed doors.

The refund procedure will begin on February 1, with ticket money and booking fees to be automatically returned to the card used to purchase tickets.

Those who made payment by cash or whose refund is unable to be automatically processed to card, will be contacted by the club’s ticketing team.

In such instances, a manual refund will be issued.

It is anticipated the entire process will be completed by the end of next month.

But already some fans have contacted the Blues to donate their refunds to the club.

Since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic last March, Pompey have been haemorrhaging around £700,000 per month.

Such losses will continue with fans remaining locked out of games.

So the kind gesture some fans have already made has been warmly welcomed by the club, who also thanked their wider fan base for their continued support throughout the pandemic.

A statement by Pompey read: Portsmouth Football Club recently announced that supporters who purchased tickets for the postponed 2019-20 EFL Trophy final would receive an automatic refund.

‘We have since received a number of messages from fans who have generously offered to donate that money to the club.

‘It is a gesture that is greatly appreciated, particularly in these challenging financial times, when football – as with most industries – has been so greatly affected.

‘If any supporter would like to donate their EFL Trophy refund back to the club, then they should email [email protected] before Monday, February 1 to arrange this.

‘Pompey would like to thank all fans for their continued support during this difficult period and we look forward to welcoming you back to Fratton Park when it is safe to do so.’
